Former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar expressed his surprise over Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Test retirement, admitting he expected them to retire after the England series. Both legends ended their Test careers earlier this month but will continue playing ODIs, leaving a significant gap in India’s Test squad ahead of the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
Vengsarkar, a former chief selector, said, “Both are outstanding cricketers, and their contributions to Indian cricket are immense. I expected them to retire after the England Tests, but they chose to step away before the series. Ultimately, it’s their decision.”
“Their experience in English conditions is irreplaceable. Young players must now step up and prove themselves,” Vengsarkar added.
With Rohit’s exit, India will need a new captain for the five-match England series starting June 20. The selectors must find strong replacements to fill the void left by these two batting giants.
After retiring from T20Is post the 2024 T20 World Cup win, both players will focus on ODIs and franchise cricket.
