India embarks on a fresh journey in the World Test Championship (WTC) with a challenging five-Test series against England next month. However, the team will step onto the field without two of its biggest stalwarts—Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli—who recently announced their retirements from Test cricket. AB de Villiers, Kohli’s longtime friend and former teammate, shared his thoughts on this transition, emphasizing that India’s young brigade must rise to the occasion.
With Shubman Gill leading the side, India enters a crucial phase in red-ball cricket. The absence of Kohli, Rohit, and veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (who retired last year) leaves a significant void. Additionally, the team will miss the services of Mohammed Shami, who missed selection due to fitness concerns.
“Shubman Gill is taking on the responsibility, and there’s no shortage of talent in Indian cricket.”
He credited the Indian Premier League (IPL) for nurturing young players, giving them exposure at an early age.
Facing England in their home conditions remains one of the toughest challenges in cricket.
“If they believe in themselves, they can achieve something special,” de Villiers added.
Kohli’s sudden retirement shocked fans worldwide, but de Villiers respected his decision:
“He followed his gut feel. Virat has done so much for cricket globally.”
Switching focus to the IPL 2024 playoffs, de Villiers initially backed Punjab Kings (PBKS) to reach the finals despite their crushing defeat against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
“I still think Punjab has a chance, but after last night’s game, I have some doubts,” he admitted, referring to Mumbai Indians’ thrilling win over Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator.
De Villiers highlighted how the IPL has accelerated player development:
While Kohli’s absence leaves a massive gap, de Villiers remains optimistic:
“India has always produced great cricketers. This tour will test their character, but talent has never been an issue.”
The England series marks the beginning of a new era—one where India’s young stars must carve their own legacy.
