Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has openly addressed a significant concern regarding India’s performance in Test cricket. Despite their recent Champions Trophy 2025 victory, Ganguly believes there is a crucial aspect that requires improvement for the team to dominate red-ball cricket consistently.
In a recent interview, Ganguly pointed out that India’s batting lineup, particularly in overseas conditions, remains an area of concern. He emphasized that younger players, including Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant, must take more responsibility and deliver match-winning performances in Test matches. He firmly stated:
“My main concern is the Test team’s batting consistency. We need our top-order batsmen to step up, especially in challenging conditions abroad.”
The former Indian skipper believes that the current squad possesses immense talent but lacks the consistency required to dominate longer formats. While players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have proven their mettle, the next generation needs to rise to the occasion. Ganguly elaborated:
“You cannot expect just one or two players to carry the entire batting lineup. It has to be a collective effort if India wants to succeed in Test cricket.”
While discussing India’s upcoming five-Test series against England, Ganguly expressed confidence in Virat Kohli. He firmly believes that Kohli will not struggle throughout the series and will be a crucial asset for the team.
“I can’t imagine Virat Kohli struggling in all five Tests. His experience and skill will drive a strong comeback.”
Sourav Ganguly’s insights highlight an essential area India must improve upon to solidify their dominance in Test cricket. While the team has world-class talent, consistent batting contributions from emerging stars will be crucial for sustained success. As India gears up for the England series, all eyes will be on the young guns to prove their mettle in red-ball cricket.
